Banaras - A mystic love story tries to explore the complex equation between faith, spirituality and mortal love.
It's the story of a daughter, Shwetambari (Urmila Matondkar), and the bond she shares with her orthodox rich Brahmin parents, Dimple Kapadia and Raj Babbar.
A science student at the university, life is a smooth sail for this young girl till she finds love. Things turn chaotic as Shwetambari falls in love with Soham (Ashmit Patel) a music teacher at the university. Soham belongs to the lower caste, is a mystic, and protégé of Babaji (Naseeruddin Shah).
Their unorthodox union creates a uproar in the city of traditions. Though her parents lend a supportive hand, destiny lends a cruel shock to Shwetambari. The devastated girl makes a tough decision and abandons her hometown.
Time flies, and 17 years on Shwetambari, now a teacher of philosophy, is forced to make a choice once again. Does she have the courage to face her tumultuous past? Should she return to meet her dying father? Or continue to live in denial?

· With the temple town of Varanasi as the backdrop, the film promises to be a visual treat.
· Nasseruddin Shah is reportedly playing a mystical character, with all the answers in the movie. After the affable ghost in Chamatkar, this one will surely be interesting.
· Pankuj has so far rolled out masala potboilers like Chaalbaaz, Himalayaputra and Tumko Na Bhool Payenge. With Banaras…, he hopes to break into the 'different' film genre.
· This one could well be another feather in the cap for leading lady Urmila.
