This has been the main cricket stadium in the country. It was earlier called the National Stadium, and then was renamed as Bangabandhu National Stadium in honor of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The ground is also brought into use for football matches. The first one-day international here was played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the Wills Asia Cup in 1988-89.
