During the past 10 days, BMC administration attached the properties of about 60 defaulters. The Municipal Corporation Act authorises the municipal commissioner for auctioning the attached properties. Now, these powers have been given to zonal officers.
This would enable BMC authorities for quick disposal of properties of defaulters. So far, the BMC has not auctioned properties of individual defaulters. The BMC has only auctioned properties of couple of institutional defaulters.
According to BMC officials, the delegation of powers would not solve this problem, as the rate of political intervention in the urban body was very high. So, it would be hard to auction the attached properties, said an official.
