Six members of a family were feared killed when a Brazilian plane plunged into the Atlantic off the southeastern coast of Brazil, according to local media reports.

The two-engine Seneca PA-34 was piloted by a Brazilian Air Force officer. The five passengers were his wife and four children.

The cause of the mishap on Saturday off the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo was not immediately known.
The plane was flying from the provincial capital Vitoria to Salvador de Bahia and plunged into the sea about 20 minutes after takeoff.
Search efforts were called off late Saturday due to darkness.
