"The law and order situation in the state is fast deteriorating and police have failed to take action against those involved in the killing of dera follower Lily Kumar in Mansa district last week," Balkar Singh, who led the protestors, said.

They alleged failure on part of the Punjab government to provide them protection.

"Our protest is against the failure of the Punjab government to protect lives of the followers in the state," Balkar said.

Their leaders, Balkar and Gurbachan Singh, also submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner to be forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister.

The protesters further alleged that they were not being allowed to perform "Nam Charcha" (religious discourse) in the
state.

Lily Kumar, a follower of Dera Sachcha Sauda sect, whose chief had earned the wrath of Sikh clergy for allegedly
dressing like a Sikh guru, was shot dead by an unidentified gunmen at a village in Mansa district of Punjab on July 28.
