Drugs worth Rs 100 cr seized in south Delhi

Drug trafficking is rising in Delhi and is emerging as a major transit point for narcotic smuggling.

In a major drug haul, the Narcotics Control Bureau on Monday, seized 550 kgs of a chemical worth about Rs 100 crore in the international market and arrested two persons in this connection.

The contraband Ephedrine was seized from near the Inland Container Depot in Okhla area of south Delhi.

However, NCB officials refused to divulge the names and whereabouts of the arrested persons and details about the seizure saying "it would hamper further investigations in the case."

"We are looking out for a couple of more persons in connection with the case and raids are continuing at several places," a senior NCB official said in Delhi.

Ephedrine is used for making amphetamine and Ecstasy tablets, both costly drugs popular in south-east Asian and American countries.

This is third major seizure of narcotics substances in the capital in three weeks. Delhi Police had seized 100 kgs of ephedrine, bound for the US, and arrested four members of an international drug cartel operating in north India on August 20.
