THERE WAS need for existence of a ‘federal law’ in India on the lines of the United States to have a better co-ordination between the states and the Centre for checking the menace of terrorism in the country, said UPCC president Salman Khurshid on Wednesday.
Talking to mediapersons here at the district Congress Commitee office today, Khurshid expressed his dissatisfaction over the pace of investigation the twin bomb blasts in the city on March 7.
“In India, law and order is fully the subject of the state and the Centre can not directly interfere in the matter . If the UP Government urges the Centre for a CBI inquiry in this connection, the Centre would extend all help,” he said.
Khurshid added the style of functioning of the UP Government to maintain law and order was not satisfactory. It had not recommended to the Centre for constitution of a CBI inquiry in connection with blasts due to vested interests, he said.
In response to a query about the allegation of opposition parties against the Congress for promoting terrorism through minority appeasement policy, he said it was a baseless charge because appeasement could only increase the percentage of votes. There was no appeasement policy for the tribals but some of them had become naxals and terrorists. Osma Bin Laden created panic not due to the appeasement policy of the Afghan Government, he said.
Speaking about the proposed yatra of Lal Krishna Advani, he advised him not to take advantage of terrorist incidents in the name of yatra and to clarify why the BJP did not let him continue as the president of the party. “ There is no question of the Congress taking Advani’s yatra seriously as his own BJP is not taking it seriously,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}Commenting on the pitiable condition of weavers in Varanasi and Purvanchal, he said he would talk to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party leader Ambika Soni for initiating steps for relief to the poverty stricken weavers. He stressed the need for developing some weaver-dominated localities in Varanasi as tourist spots where tourist would visit and see the artisans’ work.
