In the first sentencing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam case, a Delhi court on Wednesday sent five people, including four MCD officials, to prison.
The case relates to CWG street lighting scam which had caused a loss of Rs 1.4 crore to the exchequer. Corruption, negligence and irregularities in carrying out various projects related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games cost the nation more than Rs 2,300 crore, according to a CAG report.
The court sentenced main accused TP Singh, managing director of private firm Sweka Powertech Engineers Pvt Ltd, to six years in jail in the street lighting scam case.
Four other accused have been handed a four-year jail sentence. The four Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials are former superintendent engineer DK Sugan, executive engineer OP Mahala, accountant Raju V and tender clerk Gurcharan Singh, according to reports.
The convicts were accused of charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery for purpose of cheating and were also charged under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had said in its 2011 chargesheet that the convicts entered into a criminal conspiracy for upgrading street lights for the CWG and awarded the contract to a private firm by manipulating tender documents.
