When I reviewed Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch a few months ago, I mentioned how funny it was to read an adolescent’s craze with the arsenal football club. Personally, I have experienced the same but I am slightly removed from the whole cacophony associated with the David Beckhams and Man Utds, or sir Alex Fergussens for that matter.

The Rough Guide to English Football is an essential fan hand-book. But it is not one of those yet another run-of-the-mill guides to football. For its size it is perhaps the most comprehensive guides on the subject I have ever read. Concentrating on just the English Premiership Clubs it lists them alphabetically and traces their history right from the day when each club was instituted and till their last win or defeat.

What is interesting is the format in which the whole affair has been planted. On one side is the trivia spanning, on an average, 90 or more years and their wins and loses, and on the other a short guide to their home stadiums, seating capacity, features, directions…you name it! And like all guide books this too comes with extensive maps detailing the stadiums and the way to get there.
