Fernandes escaped unhurt in the accident at Krishnanagore, about 120 km from Kolkata.
"The incident occurred around 10.30 am when Fernandes was proceeding towards Nadia's Kotwali to attend a programme at an eye hospital. A cycle van suddenly came before the pilot car leading the convoy. As the driver of the pilot car slammed the brake, Fernandes' car hit it from behind," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told IANS.
"Since the pilot car was going at a slow speed it suffered only minor damage. Fernandes escaped unhurt," Kanojia said.
Later Fernandes said, "I was not injured. Only the pilot car was damaged."
Police said there was no security breach but they have launched an inquiry.
