Gunmen abduct Foreign Ministry official in Iraq

Wissam Jabr, who specialises in relations with neighbouring Iran, was abducted near his home.

Gunmen seized an Iraqi Foreign Ministry official who specialises in relations with neighbouring Iran, police said.

Wissam Jabr was seized near his home in the Amil neighbourhood when kidnappers in three vehicles blocked his car on his way to work, police Lt Mohammed Khayoun said.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry would not comment immediately on the report. However, officials in the ministry confirmed that Jabr was assigned to the Iran department of the ministry.
