Small is beautiful but small also seems to be reliable here. A survey of about 406 car models in the UK has revealed that small cheap cars are more reliable than larger expensive models.

Honda Jazz, which cost less than £9,000, was named the most reliable car, beating off competition from BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes.

The Honda Jazz scored 95% for its reliability, with no breakdown and only a handful of faults and niggles out of the 406 models sampled.

And while it topped the supermini category, with no breakdowns, Honda's Accord was the best in the large car category.

The Honda CR-V proved the most reliable off-roader, along with the Subaru Forester in the survey, which looked at the breakdown record over 12 months and other faults, niggles and repairs.

The BMW 5 Series and the Jaguar S-type both scored an under average 83%.

The Jaguar X-type, Nissan Primera, and Renault's Megane and Scenic all rated 80%, while the Focus C-Max was rated at 78%.

However, Mercedes-Benz E-class had its fair share of problems, with 32% of owners needing repairs in the last year, uninspiring for a luxury car costing more than £27,000.
