Manmohan Singh (60), who was nabbed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday for posing as the political adviser to the Prime Minister, used to shoot off letters to district administrations and police before embarking on his tours.
His modus operandi was revealed by a letter which landed at the office of the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner on Saturday. Demanding adequate security cover, the letter mentioned that the 'political advisor and chief coordinator to the PM' was to travel from Delhi to Jammu by road through Amritsar.
Manmohan had visited the holy city on Sunday. On his way to Jammu, the Amritsar (Rural) police gave him security cover.
Copies of the letter were sent to the DGPs of Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir as well as various district magistrates.
Sources said Manmohan had also visited Amritsar recently, but failed to get attention from the district administration.
Talking to HT, Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu, said, “As I saw the letter, I smelt a rat. I contacted the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to verify facts. Everything became clear when Manmohan was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Amritsar (Rural) SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said, “After receiving the letter, we decided to provide him security cover. It was later revealed that he was an imposter.”
