Indians charged with bribe in Singapore
Five have been charged with bribing a Singaporean to help them register coffee stalls under the latter's name.
Five illegal immigrants from India have been charged with bribing a Singaporean, also of Indian origin, to help them register coffee stalls under the latter's name.
Anand Ramesh, Muthuswamy Thirumrugan, Durai Manickam Morarji, Sahul Hameed and Mohamed Sharief were charged on Tuesday with paying Shanmugam Srinivasam S$50 to S$250 a month to help them register with the National Environment Agency, the statutory body responsible for maintaining public health in this city state.
The five could not register on their own as they were all immigration offenders, according to a report in the Today newspaper.
While Ramesh faced seven charges, Thirumurugan faced six, Morarji three, Hameed two and Sharief five.
Morarji has also been fined S$6,000 on two of his three charges. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to spend 12 weeks in jail, the report said.
The Singaporean, Srinivasam, has not yet been charged and is still under investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), which had first got reports of him receiving bribes in February this year.
