A Punjab police inspector was injured in Gera village of Hajipur block when supporters of a candidate went berserk on learning about his defeat in the panchayat election. Inspector Manjit Singh was leaving the site at around 11 pm on Wednesday, after safely dispatching off the polling party when he was overpowered by the mob.

He was pelted with stones and beaten up with sticks before the rest of the police party could rescue him.

Sources said that the presiding officer had declared one Om Parkash as the winner, but it later emerged that the counting staff had overlooked a bundle of votes which when counted, went in favour of SAD-backed candidate Ranka Ram. When the latter was declared elected, supporters of Om Parkash insisted on recounting.

Mukerian SDM Rahul Chaba also reached the spot and explained to them that they could file a petition with the district electoral officer for a re-count. As soon as the SDM and other officials left, the police party on duty helped the polling-cum-counting staff safely board the bus, but agitated people started pelting stones and bricks.
