The Portland Trail Blazers waived former National Basketball Association first-round draft selection Qyntel Woods on Friday, the same day he pleaded guilty in court to abusing his dog.
Woods had been on the Trail Blazers' suspended list since October, when allegations of animal abuse surfaced and Woods came under investigation for a felony charge that he had participated in or possibly hosted a dog-fighting event.
In Oregon court on Friday, Woods was sentenced to 12 months probation and 80 hours of community service.
"In light of developments, it is clear that the Trail Blazers and Qyntel Woods must part ways," team president Steve Patterson said. "We are confident that this action is justified and appropriate."
The NBA had their own clash with Woods, who was suspended for five games on October 29 for violating the league's drug program.
Selected 21st overall in 2002, Woods was in the final year of three-year contract that would have paid him 1.1 million dollars.
