Yasir was one of the biggest militant leaders in Kashmir. "He had been the Jaish chief in Kashmir for the last three years," said Kashmir inspector general of police Abdul Ghani Mir.

The encounter took place at Garewad village in Lolab. Yasir was killed around 6.25am, said an army official who did not want to be named.

The fire exchange took place after security forces spotted suspicious movement of some persons and challenged them, the official added.
