Johnson, who is bowling in the nets again following a knee problem, will face a fitness test on Wednesday before a triangular series against South Africa and Zimbabwe starting on Thursday.

"We're optimistic he will be passed fit," England media manager Andrew Walpole said.

England play Zimbabwe in the opener at Trent Bridge.

Johnson took six wickets in his debut innings against Zimbabwe at Chester-le-Street earlier this month. James Kirtley, who replaced him in the 15-man squad, has been released.
