"Siras's family met us and demanded an impartial inquiry," Superintendent of Police Maan Singh Chauhan said.

Siras, who was suspended — but later reinstated — in February, following a video clip showing him having sex with another man, was the Chairman of AMU's modern Indian language department.

There were reports that Siras's postmortem confirmed he died of poisoning, though Chauhan said his viscera has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Agra to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Earlier, a case of criminal trespass, assault and wrongful confinement was lodged against seven persons based on a petition filed by Siras on March 4.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Aligarh passed the orders on Friday against AMU Proctor Zubair Khan, his deputy Dr Fareed Ahmad Khan, PRO Dr Rahat Abrar and media advisor Professor N A K Durrani, and TV reporters Adil Murtuza and Aasu.
