The legal fraternity on Wednesday hailed the Supreme Court verdict on the BMW expose case holding noted criminal lawyer RK Anand guilty of contempt of court, saying it is good for the profession and would help clean up the system.
Noted criminal lawyers Ram Jethmalani and KTS Tulsi welcomed the verdict, saying that it would help in restoring the dignity of the profession.
"I am glad with the judgement but still things remain hidden and some day they are to be exposed. It is good for us and for the legal machinery. He (Anand) deserved it as he was trying to make money at the cost of his client," Jethmalani, who defended Sanjeev Nanda in the BMW hit-and-run case in Delhi High Court, said.
Anand, the defence counsel, was shown in a sting operation carried out by a news channel on May 30, 2007 as colluding with the then Special Public Prosecutor I U Khan to influence controversial witness Sunil Kulkarni during trial of the case.
"Truth has triumphed. There was never any doubt about the authenticity of the recordings of the tape. It is indeed sad that it took so long for the final verdict to come but I am glad the Supreme Court has again reiterated the importance of legal profession and its duty to the society and to the court," Tulsi said.
