A fisherman's wife has created history in Manipur by giving birth to quintuplets - four girls and one boy - within a gap of 10 minutes at a government hospital. However, a girl died soon after she was born.
Oinam Gita, 35, who is already a mother to four children, went into labour within just 28 weeks into pregnancy on Monday afternoon and became the proud mother of the babies.
The condition of two more baby girls, weighing 800 and 900 grams each, who were still in the intensive care unit at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital, is said to be critical. The condition of the first born girl and third born boy, both weighing around 900 grams each, is stable, RIMS Hospital sources said.
The condition of Gita, a resident of Thanga Samukol village in Manipur's Bishnupur district, is said to be stable too.
"We're monitoring the other babies too," Dr L Ranabir, head of department of Pediatrics told media persons. "The obstetric team is trying to help them."
In India, 38-year-old Anju Kushwaha from the Satna district of central Madhya Pradesh, gave birth to ten babies at the same time in December last year, but none survived.
