The organisers of the Hiranandani half-marathon in Thane will help the family of 47-year-old Suresh Cherusseri get the amount that he was insured for before participating in the event.
Cherusseri, a former junior basketball player, collapsed and died after finishing the marathon on Sunday.
“We had provided insurance cover to all the participants and are in talk with the insurance company. We will lend whatever possible support to the family of the deceased,” said Nagesh Shetty from Striders, a fitness firm, which had organised the event in sponsorship with the Hiranandani Group.
Shetty, however, refused to divulge the amount saying that they were still negotiating with the insurance firm.
An employee of TCS, Cherusseri had represented India in the Junior Asia Championship in Kuala Lumpur in 1985.
On Sunday, he had participated in the 21km half-marathon and completed the run in 2 hour, 24 minutes and four seconds. However, he collapsed at the finish line.
“Pawar, a resident of Kandivli, collapsed at 10am. He was taken to the Hiranandani hospital, where he was declared dead around 11.30am.
He had suffered a massive stroke while running,” said DR Pawar, senior inspector, Kasarvadavli police station, adding that he is survived by his wife and two children.
According to organisers of the event, Cherusseri was administered CPR by a team of doctors at the event site, but his condition did not improve.
