MMRDA appointed as nodal agency for airport slum rehab

MMRDA will take over slum rehab work on airport land which will continue for the next three years, reports Lalatendu Mishra.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the operator of the Mumbai airport has appointed Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the nodal agency for rehabilitation of slums on airport land.

Though the agreement to this effect was signed on December 12, the documents were exchanged between senior MIAL and MMRDA officials on Thursday.

Confirming this, MIAL Managing Director Sanjay Reddy said, "We want to carry out a model programme for the rehabilitation and resettlement of slum dwellers. We are happy to appoint MMRDA who have the expertise in such matters."

MMRDA commissioner T Chandrashekhar could not be reached for comment.

As per the agreement MMRDA will help in the rehabilitation of slum dwellers and the scope of work include preparation of the survey of deserving slum dwellers need to be rehabilitated, selection of land for resettlement, building infrastructure for resettlement as well to undertake post rehabilitation work. MMRDA will be paid a specific amount on per hutment basis and the quantum is still not known.
