ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY executive council senior member Sunit Vyas has expressed surprise at the contention of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav that if the MLN Medical College was attached to the Allahabad University, which had got Central status, there would be a reduction in seats in the MBBS and PG courses in the Government Medical College.

Vyas said the CM surprisingly urged Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh to keep the medical college under the administrative control of the State Government. Vyas said the Chief Minister’s fears were unfounded and the Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, under the Allahabad University, would make tremendous progress and the number of admissions would considerably increase.
“New hostels will be constructed and the condition of the Swaroop Rani Hospital will also improve,” he said in a communiqué issued on Sunday.

Vyas said Mulayam Singh Yadav should have expressed satisfaction that a university of the State had been granted the status of a Central University and would play an important role in his efforts to make UP an “Uttam Pradesh”.
Vyas said the State Government gave a recurring grant of Rs 22 crore per year to the Moti Lal Nehru College, besides spending about Rs 100 crore on Swaroop Rani and other hospitals.

Now that the Central government has taken over this responsibility, Vyas said, the Mulayam Singh Government should spend this amount on some other projects of public interest.

He expressed the hope that the Chief Minister would not insist on keeping the Moti Lal Nehru Medical College under the State Government’s control and happily hand over administration of the medical college to the Allahabad University.

Notably, the Bill passed by the Parliament and signed by the President on July 14 to make it an Act has included the Moti Lal Nehru Medical College also as Allahabad University’s constituent college and as such the plea of the chief minister is unjustified,” Vyas added.
