Tension loomed over Delhi and neighbouring NCR towns on the eve of the call of ‘NCR Roko’ by the Gujjar community.
Security has been intensified and extra force has been deployed at borders, highways and vulnerable spots in Delhi, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Noida.
Delhi police officers said they have intelligence inputs that the protesters would try to block major arterial roads in south and east Delhi, where they have a considerable presence.
“There would be a heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces to contain any kind of violence. We have got 4,000 policemen apart from the local police in the areas where problems are expected,” a senior police officer said. The strike is bound to cause a stir in the Capital, he added.
“We are in constant touch with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh police. We will share information regarding any problem in the adjoining states for better management,” the officer said.
The Gujjar leaders of Delhi have asked their Rajasthan counterparts not to block the supplies of essential commodities in the national Capital. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Chief Patron of the Akhil Bhartiya Gujjar Sangharsh Samiti and a MLA from Delhi, said they would only organise sit-in at the BJP offices in the block, district and state level to protest against the “anti-Gujjar” attitude of the BJP government in Rajasthan.

A large number of paramilitary forces, including CRPF and Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), have been called in both the cities to tackle the law and order situation. The district administrations of both the districts have also clamped Section 144, which restricts the movement of more than four persons.

{{/usCountry}}Though the city remained largely peaceful on Wednesday, a group of about a dozen Gujjar youths burnt tyres and tried to disrupt traffic movement at M.G. Road near DLF Phase III. The timely intervention by the police averted traffic jams.
While no major untoward incident has so far taken place in Ghaziabad, senior police officers said they are not taken any chances. “We have also requested the Gujjar leaders to keep their protest peaceful and they have agreed,” Ghaziabad district magistrate Deepak Aggarwal said.
The areas bordering the Capital, railway tracks and railway stations are some of the sensitive areas in the district, Ghaziabad senior superintendent of police Deepak Ratan said.
