The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday directed the Maharashtra government to send a report within two weeks on the killing of a Patna youth inside a bus in Mumbai following high drama.
Taking suo-motu cognizance of police firing on Rahul Raj in the eastern suburb of Kurla on October 22, the NHRC asked the Director General of Maharashtra Police and Mumbai Police Commissioner to submit requisite reports, including the inquest and the post-mortem reports, an NHRC statement said.
Claiming that he had come to Mumbai to kill MNS leader Raj Thackeray, Rahul with a country-made revolver had held a bus load of passengers hostage. He was killed in a shootout with the police subsequently.
The killing led to war of words between politicians of Bihar and Maharashtra with the state authorities claiming that the youth was killed in retaliatory fire and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar saying even if Rahul was wielding a gun, police could have captured him.
