More than 100 new buses that the Haryana government rolled out two years ago to upgrade the city’s transport system are gathering dust. Reason? Haryana Roadways has no drivers and conductors to operate them.
Since this satellite town is covered under a special financial scheme — the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Mission — the transport department utilised a portion of the funds for improving transport facility in Faridabad but in vain.
“We wonder, even after purchasing 150 buses, the buses are gathering dust,” said AS Gulati, general secretary of Confederation of Resident Welfare Associations of Faridabad.
“The process of appointment of drivers is on. Once the process is completed, the buses will be on road,” said Tarun Kumar, the newly appointed general manager of Haryana Roadways. “We have invited suggestions from public for the possible routes,” added Kumar.
The roadways claimed they have finalised 14 routes for plying the buses within city limits.
The confederation, he said, had written to the Director General of Transport department in Chandigarh on January 29 but there is no response.
“People come to us to enquire as to what happened to the city bus service and we have no answer,” Gulati said, adding that it is unfortunate that transfer of GM Roadways, Faridabad, takes place at the drop of a hat making things even difficult.
