Pakistani Rangers resorted to repeated ceasefire violations and fired at Indian positions across the LoC in north Kashmir's Kupwara on Sunday, killing a BSF jawan.
Border Security Force (BSF) constable Abhijit Nandi of 119 battalion was killed during an exchange of fire between both sides around 3:30pm in Nowgam Sector of Handwara.
The latest round of firing started around 7.30pm near the Sonapindi post and reportedly lasted around 20 minutes. The Indian Army's Kumaon regiment which was posted in the area fired back on a nearby range housing Pakistani pickets.
Reports not yet confirmed by the army suggested that light mortar was also exchanged, which is rare in this part of the valley.
Immediately afterwards, the army launched a cordon and search operation in the nearby forest area of Lenda Began and Musa Began to flush out militants who might have sneaked in under the cover of gunfire.
According to the army, more than 150 militants are waiting on launching pads to cross into the valley.
PTI reported that there were repeated ceasefire violations during the day along the International Border (IB) in Arnia sector of Jammu as well.

{{/usCountry}}They fired 25 to 30 rounds at BSF posts, he said, adding that BSF troops guarding the borderline with Pakistan took position and retaliated.
