Police on Friday said it was taking all the reported threats and extortion notices issued by the banned ULFA "very seriously " and adopting special measures to counter such moves.
"We are aware of such extortion notices issued by the ULFA and ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua's statement to the local media that such notices would be served on various public sector companies, and adopting special security measures," Director General of Police DN Dutta said in Guwahati.
The state DGP was referring to a telephonic interview published by a local Assamese newspaper in which the ULFA supremo had threatened to issue extortion notices to major public sector companies as OIL and Coal India Limited.
In the interview, Barua said that the ULFA had issued a Rs 500 crore extortion demand on the ONGC and threatened to serve similar notices on the other public sector giants as "they had looted thousands of crores of rupees from Assam".
Meanwhile, when contacted IGP (special branch) Khagen Sarmah confirmed that the ULFA had issued the extortion letter demanding Rs 500 crore to the ONGC but said till now police was not aware that the outfit was planning to serve similar notices to other companies.
