England captain David Beckham apparently decided to step down as skipper after a heart to heart chat with wife Victoria Beckham.
An England team insider said Beckham wanted to retire from international soccer as a world cup winning captain and was heartbroken after his team’s loss to Portugal in the quarter final at Gelsenkirchen, in penalty shoot outs.
He added that the decision to resign as skipper was an emotional one, which Beckham could not have made on his own.
“A lot of raw emotion poured out during their talks on the phone. It’s a decision Becks could never have made without Victoria — they made it together. He wanted to bow out as a World Cup winner but it just didn’t turn out that way and they agreed it was time to take a new direction together. It was a mature decision which will take the pressure off the whole family,” The Sun quoted the source as saying.
