Doctors carrying out the post-mortem examination on the body of reader and chairman of the Modern Indian Languages department of Aligarh Muslim University Srinivas Ramchandra Siras could not reach any conclusion on the cause of his death.
Siras, a divorcee, was suspended in February after the AMU authorities saw a video clip of him having sex with another man. The Allahabad High Court however stayed his suspension on April 2, five months before he was to retire in September.
The panel of doctors who conducted the post-mortem said the academic could have died due to poisoning or had a heart attack.
The panel told mediapersons here that Siras had been dead for more than two to three days before his body was discovered on Wednesday. The doctors said it was likely that Siras had either consumed a poisonous substance or had a heart attack.
Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police Vijay Prakash said, “We are waiting to receive a copy of the post-mortem examination report. We will decide what step to take next only after we know what has been suggested in the report.”
Siras’s viscera and heart have been preserved and will be sent to a forensic lab for investigation.

{{/usCountry}}AMU Teachers’ Association’s honorary secretary Jamshed Siddiqui said, “We, the association, have passed a resolution demanding a judicial inquiry into the whole episode right from the first day of his suspension till his death.” He said the AMU administration took no action to reinstate Siras despite the HC’s stay.
This was, however, denied by the university’s public relations officer, Rahat Abrar.
