These provisions came into effect after the Bhupinder Singh Hooda cabinet approved an ordinance to curb the menace of ragging in educational institutes on Friday.

“The V-C, principal of schools or colleges will be responsible to stop ragging and will take preventive measures to prohibit ragging in educational institutions and ensure that no person practises ragging in any form within or outside the premises of the institution,” the Haryana Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutions Ordinance 2012 states.

According to the ordinance, the head of the institution will have to lodge an FIR if ragging is reported on campus.

In case of violation of the provisions of the ordinance, the heads would be punishable with imprisonment for a term extending up to six months.

Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Andhra Pradesh already have strong anti-ragging policies to deal with not only those who are indulging in ragging but also against college authorities.
