The Rajasthan high court on Monday barred the Jat community in Dholpur and Bharatpur districts from being treated as Other Backward Classes (OBCs) but said the community could continue to enjoy the benefits of the status across the rest of the state.
A division bench of the Rajasthan high court headed by chief justice Sunil Ambwani directed the state government to ask its OBC commission to review within four weeks the status of all communities that have been given OBC quota in the state. The high court asked the government to remove Jats of Dholpur and Bharatpur from the OBC list on the ground that they comprise the ruling classes in the two districts. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje and her son MP Dushyant Singh belong to the Jat community of Dholpur.
In 2014, the then UPA government had sought to include Jats from Dholpur and Bharatput districts as OBCs as well but the Supreme Court struck down that move earlier this year. Monday’s high court order conforms to that verdict.
Monday’s court order is unlikely to go down well with the rival community of Gujjars who have been opposing the OBC status for Jats and had even launched a violent agitation in 2008.
