Ujjain, Jul 13 (PTI) With the water level continuing to rise in rivers Kshipra and Gambhir, hopes have revived again of enough water during the observance of `Simhasth 2004' when devotees take their traditional holy dip in the rivers here.
"The total rainfall of 220 mm in Ujjain has given a major boost to the enthusiasm of the `mela' authorities and provided the trend continues, it will ensure the availability of enough water in Kshipra and Gambhir rivers", District Collector Bhupal Singh told PTI.
Ensuring availability of water in river Kshipra was proving to be a major issue with the people of the region having protested about its insufficiency in the presence of the Chief Minister recently.
"Large number of check dams and stop dams were constructed by the administration in the catchment areas to ensure availability of water in rivers during the mela", he said.
The administration has also stopped taking water for drinking purpose from Kshipra river and is providing drinking water to the city through Gambhir river by laying a 16.5 km long pipeline, he said adding, this will also ensure availability of water in the Kshipra during the mela period.
Now the drinkingwater in the entire `mela' area, satellite towns and other urban areas would be provided through Gambhir river, the collector said. MORE
