DM Azamgarh, Subash Chander confirmed this to the HT correspondent on Sunday, “The plea of mafia don Abu Salem to incorporate his name on the voter list has been out rightly rejected.” He said Abu Salem’s application was rejected on many reasonable grounds—one among theem being his absence from his home constituency for the last six months.
According to the guidelines of the Election Commission, it is mandatory for the applicant who is interested in adding his name to the voter’s list to be present in the said constituency for at least six months informed officials. However according to sources, Salem has not visited Azamgarh ever since the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
Secondly, Salem was not personally present during the filing of his application before the election officials who deal with the revision of the voter’s list, which is again a violation of EC’s guidelines. “Abu Salem’s application clearly showed he was in Mumbai jail since November 11, 2005 and this was reason enough to reject his application,” DM Sharma said.
It may be mentioned Abu Salem’s lawyer Ashok Sarangi had submitted the application on behalf of Salem for incorporation of his client’s name in the voter’s list last month. The revision process, the sources said ended a few days back in the district. Sources said Salem; the resident of Mubarakpur had applied for inclusion of his name in the voter’s list of assembly segment Saraimer.
