G P GARG, Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) has sounded caution over Indian Railways’ ambitious move of increasing the speed of Shatabdis and Rajdhanis from 130 kms to 150 kms per hour.
In an interview to HT, the CCRS laid threadbare the lack of infrastructure with the Indian Railways. “Even in the Tughlakabad- Agra Shatabdi run of 150 kilometres per hour, I had raised objections over certain issues, including fencing,” he said and clarified that he was not against increasing the speed of trains etc, but trespassing of the tracks should be effectively controlled. “My primary concern is that in a country where you have bullock carts, camels, cattle, and human beings moving on tracks, there’s need for an effective control of this before we finally venture on to such projects,” said Garg.
Referring to fencing for the Tughlaqabad-Delhi route, he said that the fencing had been done a little far away from the tracks. He added, “My contention was that the fencing should have been done somewhere near the tracks.” And more so, the fenced area is just 20 to 22 kilometres only.
Another objection that he had to the high-speed train between Tughlaqabad-Delhi was train protection warning system for the benefit of the drivers. In high speed trains, the driver may skip the warning signal and in such cases the system becomes useful as it would bring the train automatically to a halt. The system was likely to be installed on the train by June 2006.
