Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M. Karunanidhi (85) on Friday elevated his younger son and the party’s youth wing chief, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin (56), as the deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Coming within 24 hours of elder son M.K. Azhagiri (57) settling in as the chemicals and fertilisers minister in the UPA government, this completes Karunanidhi’s succession plan.

Shortly later, Karuna-nidhi said in a statement that he had taken the decision in consultation with DMK’s senior-most leader K. Anbazhagan. “For my frail health condition, I have been unable to pay full attention to my job,” he said.
