The Delhi Police on Thursday said they would question the doctor who conducted the autopsy of businesswoman-socialite Sunanda Pushkar.
Speaking to reporters at the Delhi Police Headquarters, police commissioner BS Bassi said Dr Sudhir Gupta would be questioned. Police sources, however, ruled out the questioning of former Union minister Shashi Tharoor.
“In the light of new facts that have emerged, we will question Dr Gupta,” commissioner Bassi stated.
The police were, however, unsure how the doctor’s questioning would help the case, sources said.
“The doctor has alleged that he was pressured. But he has also maintained that the report he gave was based on the ethics of medicine,” said an officer.
“So this means that he did not bow down to any pressure and the report which he has given in the first place is correct,” the officer added.
“In the light of this, there is no reason for further police proceedings into the matter and certainly no foul play involved.”
Senior police officers welcomed the probability of the case being handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“The CBI is the premier investigation agency of the country. But what will their skills do when the post-mortem report has already ruled out foul play?” the officer asked.
