At least ten people were injured in clashes between police and demonstrators on Friday during a general strike called by hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference to protest against the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
The clashes took place at different parts of the city as groups of youths indulged in stone-pelting and burning of tyres on the roads to protest against the assassination of Bhutto, official sources said.
The clashes intensified in the vicinity of Jamia Masjid after Friday prayers where police fired dozens of teargas shells to chase away the protestors.
Earlier in the day, groups of youths indulged in stone-pelting and burning of tyres at Dalgate, Babademb, Nowhatta Chowk, Rajouri Kadal, Alamgari Bazar and Kani Kadal as a result of which ten people were injured, the sources said.
Sopore also witnessed peaceful protests and a partial strike, they said. Shops and business establishments in main markets in the city remained closed, while transport which was plying normally in the morning also went off the roads as the day advanced. However, attendance in government and semi-government offices remained unaffected.
Meanwhile, the University of Kashmir announced cancellation of all examinations of post-graduate and under-graduate classes scheduled for today as a precautionary measure.
