The Delhi high court on Thursday sought the response of environmentalist RK Pachauri and the city police on a plea alleging that the TERI chief was “exercising influence” on officials of the organisation to settle the sexual harassment case lodged against him by a former woman colleague.
The petition was filed after a researcher with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) quit the institute on Thursday alleging that he was being hounded by seniors to convince the sexual harassment victim to settle the matter out-of-court.
He said his seniors, including the executive vice-chairman, had first approached him in July 2015, soon after the case was filed against Pachauri. A complaint was lodged in this regard on January 12.
“This fact clearly establishes that Pachauri is exercising influence over other officials of TERI to have the woman reach an out-of-court settlement,” the petition read. “This fact itself is an additional ground for cancellation of (his) anticipatory bail.”
The recent plea came a day before the court was to pronounce its verdict on the plaintiff’s demand for cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Pachauri by a lower court on March 21 last year. The HC has now deferred pronouncement of the order.
The complainant’s counsel, Prashant Mendiratta said the Delhi police had received the complaint on January 12, but the investigating officer and the station house officer “did not bother” to inform the HC when the case was heard on January 13.
The plea also sought direction to the Delhi police to provide the status report with regard to the complaint, contending that “Pachauri has been exercising pressure upon TERI and its officials not to provide free access to the Delhi police to the internal servers of official e-mail ID of TERI”.
Pachauri’s counsel, however, opposed the fresh application saying it is not maintainable as it has been filed by the counsel of the woman who is out of the country at present.
