Thailand military bans political gatherings

Gatherings of more than five people have been banned in Thailand in a bid to maintain public order following a successful military coup.

Gatherings of more than five people have been banned in Thailand in a bid to maintain public order following a successful military coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday night, a coup spokesperson announced on Wednesday.

In a televised statement, she also said the army would invite students to monitor efforts to reform the constitution and hold "free and fair" elections.

The spokesperson added that elections would be held soon, but she gave no timetable.

Earlier on Wednesday, Thai coup commanders in a televised nationwide speech promised to hand over power to the people soon.
