Govinda Mhatre, 15, was allegedly forced into an auto rickshaw by three accused at Diva, Mumbra police sub-inspector Mahesh Mandve said.

However, when the vehicle slowed down at Mumbra due to pothole-ridden road, the boy jumped off from the rickshaw and escaped, he said.

Mhatre then approached the police and lodged a complaint following which police launched a hunt for the accused.

Police are trying to ascertain the motive behind the attempt and have not ruled out previous enmity as the cause.

An offence under sections 363 (punishment for kidnapping), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) has been registered.
