The Pakistan government has failed to curb jihadi terrorism
It is shocking that at a time when the world celebrated New Year, hundreds of Pakistanis mourned the death of their loved ones (Suicide bomb attack kills 32, January 2). The bomb blast near a volleyball court in Lakki Marwat, North West Frontier Province, killed scores of teenaged spectators. Does the Pakistan government still needs more reasons to stop jihadis from executing their evil plans? The Asif Ali Zardari administration should acknowledge its failure in curbing terrorism and seek support before it’s too late.

The BJP’s on the wrong track
With reference to the editorial Starting from scratch, again (January 2), the BJP’s support to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to elect Shibu Soren as the new chief minister of Jharkhand will do more harm than good to the party. In the past, the BJP had condemned Soren and the JMM for allying with the UPA. Such double standards could backfire on the BJP. A mad rush for power by both parties is undemocratic and condemnable.

The BJP’s decision to ally with the JMM is against the party’s interests. It could lead to a clash of opinion among party members and further weaken its position as the Opposition. The BJP leadership should reform the party’s ideology and come up with a single and strong policy if it wants to play an active role in national politics. Coalition politics will not help it regain power.

The media’s being inconsistent
With reference to the report Cops chased the fun out of New Year eve revelry (January 2), it is surprising that the media, which criticises the police for not taking appropriate action against offenders, suddenly supported the revellers and their unruliness. If the police had failed to perform their duty on New Year’s eve, the press wouldn’t have spared the force.

Climate policies favour the rich
Praful Bidwai in Copenhagen cop out (December 31) has rightly stated that global warming is affecting the poor more than the rich. However, Bidwai’s proposition that fighting global warming would have an adverse effect on India’s efforts to curb poverty is not true. The claim that more emissions are essential to check poverty is the government’s attempt to garner public support on India’s unjustified stand on climate change at the Copenhagen summit.
