Tension gripped this coastal town in Tamil Nadu after a local fisherman was seriously injured and two others allegedly abducted in an attack by Sri Lankan fishermen at mid-sea on Sunday.

Four fishermen were fishing in deep sea when they were attacked by Sri Lankan fishermen with deadly weapons for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters, officials said.

One of the fishermen, who sustained serious injuries, reached here along with another, who managed to escape unhurt, while two others, including the owner of the boat, were taken away by the Sri Lankan fishermen, they said.

The injured fisherman has been admitted to the Government Hospital at Ramanathapuram.

Following the incident, other fishermen, who had put out to sea also returned home as a mark of protest.

Tamil Nadu fishermen facing attacks by the Sri Lankans on the charge of poaching has been a recurring problem in the region. Over 100 fishermen landed in Sri Lankan custody after a fierce battle at mid-sea a few months ago. They were later released following the intervention of the state government.
