THE TRANSPORT department bosses are too bogged down with the ‘transfers’ to pay attention to Chief Minister’s orders for launching a drive against the vehicles, carrying unauthorised red/blue beacons.
While the traffic department swung into action immediately after the Chief Minister’s orders and challaned nearly 3000 vehicles for flouting norms about beacon lights, the transport department officials showed scant regard for the CM’s dictates.
Significantly, the CM had clearly said that it would be a joint drive of the police and the transport department.
But ask transport officers, they will not be in a position to tell about the number of vehicles booked under the Motor Vehicles Act during the drive which was, in fact, never kicked off.
Additional transport commissioner (enforcement) Rameshwar Dayal often said the transport department’s one-week drive would begin from June 7. He said traffic police had started drive rather earlier as the CM, he argued, had given one week grace period to the people to voluntarily remove unauthorized beacons from their vehicles.
“So we will begin the drive from June 7 after the grace period given by the Chief Mimister is over,” he said in the first week of June. When asked yesterday, he failed to give any information on the number of vehicles challaned during the drive.
“We are yet to collect the information,” said Dayal, who is otherwise burning midnight’s oil along with his bosses sitting in his office clearing transfer lists.

{{/usCountry}}In fact, the RTOs and the ARTOs were daily seen taking rounds of the transport commissioner office instead of implementing the Chief Minister’s directives.
It, as an official said, was the ‘transfer season’ and the senior officers were too busy giving ‘desired’ postings to the RTOs and ARTOs to think of monitoring any enforcement work. “They are preoccupied with OPP, that is transfers,” he said explaining that OPP stood for ‘One Point Programme’.
