What’s in a day? That which has the Tricolour being hoisted, by any other name should seem just as patriotic.

Tripura minister Bijita Nath probably believes in Shakespeare’s line of thinking. Or, maybe she just made a mistake.

Nath extended the warmest of Independence Day greetings to the nation on Tuesday, much to the amusement of those gathered to hear her speak at Dharmanagar’s BBI ground. “I extend my warm greetings to the people on the 67th Independence Day. We should recall the contribution of the great national heroes,” the minister read out from her written script.

Then, to reinforce her mistake, she repeated Independence Day a few more times.

But Birajit Sinha, head of the Congress’ Tripura unit, didn’t seem amused. He, instead, accused the Left Front government of picking a minister who wasn’t properly educated. “A minister should have a basic knowledge of India’s constitution. I recall how she once invoked Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary at Kailasahar. I can’t even find the words to criticise her,” he said.
