"The government had sought eight weeks time, but we know that in the end of February, poll code of conduct will be implemented for Parliamentary elections and there will be virtually no government.

"Hence, we hereby give an ultimatum to the Union government to implement the agreement by February 16, otherwise we will be forced to adopt the path of strike," AIMTC President Charan Singh Lohara told reporters in Jalandhar.

On January 5, truckers had begun an indefinite strike, which was called off eight days later on January 12 after reaching an agreement with the Centre. The government had agreed to form a committee to look into their demands such as lowering diesel prices and the withdrawing service tax among others.

Lahora demanded that the government should issue a white paper on the facts behind fixation of prices of diesel and toll tax.
