BEDIA COMMUNITY of village Fatepur has decided to prevent their girls from going into prostitution. The community is known for allowing their girls to perform Rai dance in the Bundelkhand region, on various occasions like marriage, birthday and several of them are gradually pushed into prostitution. As girls earn a living, the menfolk stay at a home.
Few social organisations having been trying to motivate the community to live an honourable life. Under Banda block village Fatepur is situated on NH. 86 on the Sagar-Khajuraho road. At present there are 37 young girls in the age group of six to 18 years and 19 women are involved in the dancing profession. These 37 girls were likely to step into the trade, but community members have decided against it.
Community members also decided that those women who are earning from the dancing profession should not go into prostitution and if they were found guilty they would be punished.
Nanhi Bai who dances for a living has two girls who are studying in school. After the community’s decision, she is hoping that both her girls could get married after completing your studies.
