Woman delivers on floor of hospital, newborn dies
A newborn baby died after being delivered on the floor of the Jaunpur district hospital in Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning, reports Anuraag Singh.
A newborn baby died after being delivered on the floor of the Jaunpur district hospital in Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning.
The mother, Sima, 30, was admitted to the government hospital at Jaunpur, about 60 km from Varanasi. She was immediately taken to the operation theatre, as her condition was critical.
The hospital staff informed the doctor on duty over the phone that there was an emergency case, but the doctor asked them to shift the patient to the maternity ward, said Nirmala Sharma, district president of ASHA (accredited Social health activist) Workers’ Union.
She said Sima delivered the baby on the hospital floor while she was being shifted to the ward. The baby is said to have suffered injuries to its vital organs during the birth on the hard floor.
While the baby succumbed on Monday morning, the condition of the mother is also said to be critical.
Family members and relatives of Sima have brought charges of negligence of duty against the doctor.
Another woman had reportedly given birth to a baby in the hospital’s toilet a few days ago.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Rita Chatterjee, while admitting that there was laxity on the part of the hospital staff, said the matter would be probed thoroughly.
