Woman held after acid attack on nephew
THE POLICE arrested 25-year-old Baxi Bag resident Durgabai after she threw acid on her nephew Chanki alias Pankaj Gaud while he was walking past Lokhande Bridge this morning. Chanki, who works in a factory, has been admitted to M Y Hospital for treatment. M G Road police have registered a case against Durgabai under Section 324, 506 of IPC.

During the course of interrogation, Pankaj (22) told police that he had an illicit relationship with his maternal aunt and they had eloped to Katra in Jammu and Kashmir on October 9, 2005. Her husband lodged a missing complaint at Sadar Bazaar police station on November 10, 2005.
Pankaj said they ran out of cash after one and half months and he rang up his father asking for some cash. His father informed Durgabai’s husband who went to Katra and brought them to Indore.
In the statement made to police, Chanki alleged that Durgabai threw acid on him out of jealousy when she came to know that he was about to marry, and would live separately. He also said that they had an agreement and decided to end the relationship after reaching Indore.
According to police, Durgabai had eloped earlier also. Her husband, who is allegedly impotent and a drunkard, sells leaves for cattle and goats. Durgabai, a housewife, has adopted the son of her sister, as the couple have no issue.
After throwing acid on Pankaj, Durgabai headed straight to Indore Press Club to tell reporters her side of the story. She said that she threw acid on her nephew to prevent him from harassing her niece (sister’s daughter) sexually.
She said Chanki had been threatening to throw acid on her face and kill her adopted son if she prevented him from meeting her niece. “So before he could target me, I splashed acid on him,” Durgabai claimed.
However, she had no reply when asked why she accompanied Pankaj to Katra. She said that she succumbed to his wishes to protect her adopted son.
